The Sam Houston State Bearkats and the Grand Canyon Antelopes meet Thursday in WAC Tournament college basketball action from Orleans Arena. Sam Houston State is 19-13 on the season. The Bearkats took out Cal Baptist in their tournament game Wednesday. As for Grand Canyon, they’re 22-7 this year and coming off a win over Dixie State. Sam Houston State was just 4-8 back in late December. The Bearkats have lost consecutive games just once since then, however. After two road losses to Stephen F. Austin and Grand Canyon, Sam Houston State finished off the regular season with a win over Tarleton.
In the Wednesday tournament matchup versus California Baptist, the Bearkats got off to a fast start with a 30-17 halftime lead. Sam Houston State kept it going 35-18 in the second for a 65-35 blowout win. Savion Flagg doubled up with 15 points and 13 boards.
Over on the Grand Canyon side, they had a three-game losing streak back in January, but outside of that they haven’t lost consecutive games this year. The Antelopes have beaten Chicago State, Sam Houston, Utah Valley and Dixie State in their last quartet.
On Saturday versus Dixie State, the Antelopes posted a 34-27 advantage in the first half and a 36-26 run the rest of the way in a 70-53 win. Holland Woods was the top scorer on the team with 13 points, seven assists and four boards.
PICK: I’m likely going to stay with Grand Canyon but staying away. The Antelopes are on a nice 8-2 run over their last 10 games. There’s a bit of concern with the scoring output—68 or fewer in six of those 10 outings—but you can’t argue with the results.
As for Sam Houston State, they put up a solid victory Wednesday. The Bearkats won the first meeting with Grand Canyon this year 58-56, but fell 67-41 in the February 26 rematch. Sam Houston State will likely hang around if the score stays low here though, so anything’s possible.
