The Virginia Cavaliers & 25th ranked North Carolina Tar Heels will square off at the Barclays Center this Thursday night in the Quarterfinals of the New York Life ACC Tournament.

The 6-seed Virginia Cavaliers improved to 19-12 on the season after defeating the 11-seed Louisville Cardinals, 51-50, this past Wednesday. Virginia trailed by a 24-20 margin at halftime, however, the Cavaliers found some offensive success in the 2nd half against Louisville and was able to secure the win after a pair of Jayden Gardner FT’s gave the Cavaliers a 51-47 lead with just :04 seconds left in regulation. Virginia shot just 42.0% from the field & 0.0% from beyond the arc while holding Louisville to just 35.7% shooting from the field & 22.7% from beyond the arc. Leading the way for the Cavaliers was Kihei Clark who had 15 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, & 2 steals.

On the season, Virginia is averaging 63.6 ppg on 45.3% shooting from the field. The Cavaliers are averaging 5.2 three-pointers per game on 32.7% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Virginia has been led by Jayden Gardner (15.2 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 1.5 apg), Armaan Franklin (11.5 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 1.5 apg, 1.1 spg), Kihei Clark (10.2 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 4.3 apg), & Reece Beekman (8.1 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 4.9 apg, 2.1 spg).

Defensively, Virginia is holding their opponents to an average of 60.4 ppg on 42.8% shooting from the field. The Cavaliers have a rebound margin of 0.6 and a turnover margin of 1.3.

The 25th ranked North Carolina Tar Heels finished their regular season with an overall record of 23-8 record and earned the 3-seed in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship after finishing conference play with a 15-5 conference record. North Carolina finished their non-conference portion of their schedule with an 8-3 record with their best win coming against Michigan. North Carolina lost 3 of their first 7 conference games, however, finished the conference season strong, winning 11 of their last 13 games which included their outstanding victory at Duke in their regular season finale.

On the season, North Carolina is averaging 78.6 ppg on 45.8% shooting from the field. The Tar Heels are averaging 8.5 three-pointers per game on 37.4% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, North Carolina has been led by Armando Bacot (16.6 ppg, 12.5 rpg, 1.5 apg, 1.7 bpg), Caleb Love (15.7 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 3.7 apg, 1.2 spg), Brady Manek (14.4 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 1.9 apg), & R.J. Davis (13.6 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 3.4 apg, 1.1 spg).

Defensively, North Carolina is allowing their opponents to average 72.6 ppg on 43.6% shooting from the field. The Tar Heels have a rebound margin of 7.6 and a turnover margin of -1.7.

The Cavaliers are 8-0 ATS in thier last 8 games following a ATS loss & 4-0 ATS in thier last 4 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600. The Tar Heels are 4-1 ATS in thier last 5 games overall, however, are 0-4-1 ATS in thier last 5 neutral site games.

North Carolina defeated Virginia in their only matchup in the regular season as the Tar Heels defeated the Cavaliers by a 74-58 margin at home in early January.

Virginia has been led by their defense that comes into this game ranked 9th in scoring defense & t-88th in turnover margin, however, the offense has once again been an issue for the Cavaliers as they rank just 327th in scoring offense. North Carolina has been led by their offense which ranks t-27th in scoring offense & 80th in FG% and although heir defense has struggled a bit, ranking 264th in scoring defense & 195th in defensive FG%, the Tar Heels have been solid on the boards, ranking 9th in rebound margin. North Carolina is a solid team, however, the Tar Heels have at times been inconsistent this season as we saw in a bad loss to Pittsburgh and between the fact that I think North Carolina has a bit of a letdown after their big win at Duke and that the Cavaliers defense keeps this competitive, I’m taking Virgina to cover witht he points. Good Luck!
