The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers and the South Alabama Jaguars meet Monday in CIT college basketball action from Mitchell Center. Coastal Carolina is 18-13 overall and coming off a win over Florida Gulf Coast last week. As for South Alabama, they’re 21-11 and took out USC Upstate in their last outing. Coastal Carolina had to spend most of the year fighting off the .500 mark, but overall they’ve done a good job at staying above water. The Chanticleers lost in the conference tourney to Georgia Southern; since then they’ve beaten MD-Eastern Shore and Florida Gulf Coast in the CIT.
Matched up against Florida Gulf Coast last Monday, the Chanticleers were down 34-40 by the break. Coastal Carolina hit a 50-28 second-half run and managed the comeback win 84-68. Rudi Williams scored 24 points, and Essam Mostafa doubled with 23 points and 14 boards.
Over on the South Alabama side, they were a nice 15-5 as recently as January 27. It’s been a rough run since then though. The Jaguars finished the year on a 4-6 run, losing to Little Rock in the conference tournament. South Alabama has taken out SE Louisiana and USC Upstate since then.
Last Monday against USC Upstate, the Jaguars held a comfortable 42-29 lead by halftime. South Alabama had to scramble in the second half, eking out the eventual win 83-79. Tops in scoring was Javon Franklin with 28 points and seven rebounds.
The Jaguars are 1-4 ATS in their last five at home and 1-5 ATS in their last six overall. South Alabama is 2-5 ATS in their last seven after an ATS loss.
Meanwhile, the Chanticleers are 5-1 ATS in their last six road games and 5-1 ATS in their last six overall. The over is 6-2 in Coastal’s last eight overall.
PICK: I’m probably going to stick with Coastal here. The Chanticleers have certainly had their ups and downs on the scoreboard; they’ve looked decent lately, though. Coastal Carolina has hit 68 or more points in six of their last eight games and should score pretty well here also. South Alabama has hit 70 or more in three straight outings themselves so we should have a pretty fast-paced matchup on our hands. I like a high-total matchup here with The Chanticleers eking out a cover.
