Washington State had a couple of rough runs this year: specifically a 4-7 stretch in December/January and another at 1-6 in February. The Cougars fell to UCLA in the conference tournament, and since then they’ve beaten Santa Clara, SMU and BYU in the NIT.
In the BYU game last Wednesday, the Cougars were up 35-26 by halftime. Washington State was up 35-26 by the break and scored another 42 points on the way to a 77-58 win. Tops in scoring was Michael Flowers on 27 points with five assists and three steals.
Over on the Texas A&M side, they had a tough stretch of games back in January/February, going just 1-9 in that time. The Aggies were able to regroup before losing to Tennessee in the conference tourney. It’s been wins over Alcorn State, Oregon and Wake Forest in the NIT.
Matched up against Wake Forest, the Aggies posted a 32-15 advantage going into the second half. Texas A&M cruised the rest of the way in a 67-52 win. Wade Taylor and Quenton Jackson each scored 12 points, combining for nine rebounds and seven steals.
The Aggies are 5-2 ATS in their last seven neutral-site games and 7-1 ATS in their last eight after an ATS win. Texas A&M is 9-2 ATS in their last 11 overall.
Meanwhile, the Cougars are 0-5 ATS in their last five neutral-site games and 4-9 ATS in their last 13 after an ATS win. The under is 5-2 in Washington State’s last seven Tuesday games.
PICK: I’m probably going to stay with Texas A&M here. The Aggies have lost just one of their last 11 games (to Tennessee), and they’ve taken out some top-ranked schools during that time. Texas A&M hasn’t had a lot of trouble during this NIT, either; each win has been by 12 points or more.
As for Washington State, they’ve lost just one of their last eight games and are scoring well. The Cougars have hit 71 or more points in five of those outings and should post a decent total in this one. Ultimately I think Texas A&M will be a little too much to handle, though.
