The Gonzaga Bulldogs and the Baylor Bears meet Friday in college basketball action from Sanford Pentagon. Gonzaga enters this matchup at 5-2 overall. The Bulldogs beat Xavier in their last game. Gonzaga won their first two games of the year over North Florida and Michigan State, then took a 93-74 loss to Texas. Following wins over Kentucky and Portland State, the Bulldogs lost to Purdue in game six.
The Bulldogs were able to get past Xavier in their Sunday game. Gonzaga had a 40-34 edge going into halftime and managed to hang on for the 88-84 victory. Julian Strawther put up 23 points, while Both Drew Time and Anton Watson added 16 points apiece.
Over on the Baylor side, they were able to win their first three games over MS Valley State, Norfolk State and Northern Colorado. The Bears took a loss to Virginia then bounced back with victories over UCLA and McNeese State.
Baylor took their second loss of the year on Tuesday versus Marquette. The Bears were drilled 51-25 in the first half and didn’t get any closer in a 96-70 loss. LJ Cryer topped the team on 19 points, and Adam Flagler scored 16 with six boards.
PICK: I’m probably going to try Gonzaga here. We should have a pretty great matchup on our hands if both teams are on point. The Bulldogs put up 50 percent shooting with 13-of-24 (54.2 percent) from 3-point range in their win over Xavier on Sunday. It was a nice bounce-back effort after their 84-66 loss to Purdue last Friday. Gonzaga is still looking good so far; their two losses each came to a top-five team.
As for Baylor, they’re coming off a rough loss to Marquette. The Bears allowed the Eagles to shoot 58.3 percent from the floor and 48 percent from 3-point range (12-of-25). Baylor never recovered from the offensive onslaught in the first half. This is going to be another tough matchup, and though I like the Bears to keep it close I don’t think they’ll post a cover.
