The Old Dominion Monarchs and the Drexel Dragons meet Friday in college basketball action from Daskalakis Athletic Center. Old Dominion is 1-0 so far after a win versus MD Eastern Shore. As for Drexel, this will be their first game of the 2022-23 season. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
Old Dominion managed to go 13-19 overall last season with an 8-10 record in Conference USA play. That would leave the Monarchs ahead of only FIU and Marshall in the East Division. Old Dominion lost in the conference tourney to UTEP.
In their first game of the year versus MD Eastern Shore, the Monarchs scored 40 points in the first half and 44 more from there in an 84-65 win. Tops in scoring was Mekhi Long with 25 points and 10 boards. Tyreek Scott-Grayson also doubled on 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Over on the Drexel side, they’re coming off a pretty mediocre season in 2021-22, with a 15-14 overall record. The Dragons would finish 10-8 in Colonial Athletic Association games, putting the team in fourth place behind Towson, UNCW and Hofstra.
Drexel struggled with consistency last season and didn’t win consecutive CAA games until early February. The Dragons’ season came to an abrupt end in the first game of the CAA Tournament with a loss to Delaware.
PICK: I’m probably staying with Old Dominion. The Monarchs had a pretty dominant effort in their opener versus MD Eastern Shore, shooting 50 percent from the field and out-rebounding the opposition 44-23. Old Dominion was pretty cold from 3-point range however, with just 29.4 percent success. As for Drexel, they’ve lost some key names from last year (specifically Xavier Bell) but also retain enough talent to be reasonably competitive. Still, I don’t think they’ll gel right away.
