The Monmouth Hawks and the Iona Gaels meet Sunday in college basketball action from Hynes Athletic Center. Monmouth is currently 16-8 on the year. The Hawks beat Manhattan in their last game. Monmouth posted a 10-6 run over their first 16 games this year—and had to take a break from December 22 to January 14 along the way. It’s been a 6-2 run since with victories over Fairfield, Manhattan, Canisius, Fairfield, Quinnipiac and Manhattan again in that time.
In the Manhattan matchup, the Hawks posted a 35-29 run in the first half and a 40-36 edge from there on the way to a 75-65 victory. George Papas led the team on 23 points and eight boards, while Walker Miller added 18 points.
Over on the Iona side, their year began at 11-3 and they were only able to play three games between December 12 and January 11. The Gaels came out of that with an eight-game win streak, but since have lost to Niagara and Siena in the last pair.
On Friday versus Siena, the Gaels had a 24-24 tie by halftime. Iona was outscored 46-40 in the second half in a 70-64 loss. Tyson Jolly led the team on 20 points. Elijah Joiner added 15 points with two assists as well.
The Gaels are 11-4 ATS in their last 15 at home and 0-4 ATS in their last four overall. Iona is 8-17 ATS in their last 25 on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Hawks are 12-2 ATS in their last 14 road games and 13-3 ATS in their last 16 after an ATS win. Monmouth is 10-2 ATS in their last 12 Sunday games.
PICK: I’m going to take Iona in this one. Probably not going near it, though; the Gaels have struggled over their last two games. That said, During the eight-game win streak Iona hit 70 or more points in each outing so they’re certainly capable of putting up points in most scenarios.
The last time these teams met back on January 18, the Gaels secured an 86-85 overtime road win. This rematch should be a tight one as well, but if the Gaels can get off to a good first-half start on offense I think they’ll be okay on a cover. Should be a fun matchup regardless.
