The Penn Quakers and the Iona Gaels meet Monday in college basketball action from Hynes Athletic Center. Penn managed to go just 12-16 overall last year, landing in third place in the Ivy League standings. As for Iona, they posted a regular-season championship in the MAAC but were ousted in the first round of the NIT. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.

Penn was probably a bit rusty last season after opting out of play in 2020-21. The Quakers went 12-16 overall with a 9-5 mark in Ivy League games. That result left Penn in third place overall in the league standings, behind Princeton and Yale.

Penn started out pretty slow. The team won just three games (against Bucknell, Lafayette and Old Dominion) in the 2021 calendar year, but picked up steam once conference play began. The Quakers’ season ended with a 67-61 loss to Yale in the Ivy League Tournament.

Over on the Iona side, they had a pretty solid regular season in 2021-22. The Gaels rolled to a 25-8 result and a 17-3 run in Metro Atlantic Athletic games. Iona took the top spot in the standings by three games over Saint Peter’s.

Iona stayed consistent last season, losing consecutive games just twice throughout the course of the year. The Gaels were upset by Rider 72-71 in their first game of the MAAC Tournament however, and then lost to Florida 79-74 in the first round of the NIT.

The Quakers are 6-15 ATS in their last 21 Monday games and 1-4 ATS in their last five overall. Iona is 4-9 ATS in their last 13 overall and 2-6-1 ATS in their last nine Monday games.

PICK: I may take a stab on Penn here. The Quakers had three straight winning seasons going back in 2018-20, but it’s been pretty slim pickings in the couple of years since. The good news is that Penn returns their top four scorers from last season—a group which includes First Team All-Ivy selection Jordan Dingle. The Quakers suffered from low-percentage 3-point shooting (31) and weren’t good on defense last year. Still, with the bulk of their big offensive contributors returning, the stage is set for a nice run for Penn this year.
