The Maine Black Bears and the Merrimack Warriors meet Sunday in college basketball action from Lawler Arena. Maine is 5-4 on the year so far. The Black Bears beat Augusta in their last game. Maine lost their opener to Nebraska, but then took wins over UMFK, Boston College, Columbia and Central CT State. The Bears lost to Brown, Fordham and Marist in the next three, then beat Augusta on Thursday.

In the Augusta matchup, the Bears were up 48-33 by halftime. Maine secured a 55-34 edge in the second half on the way to a 103-67 blowout victory. Tops in scoring was Peter Filipovity, who doubled up on 16 points and 10 boards.

Over on the Merrimack side, they’ve got losses to St. John’s, Troy, Montana, St. Thomas MN, Providence, Bradley, UMass Lowell, Boston U, Vermont and San Francisco. The two wins have come versus Clark (Mass.) and UNE.

In their matchup versus the University of New England on Friday, Merrimack didn’t have much trouble. The Warriors jumped out to a ridiculous 48-6 edge by the break and cruised to the 82-23 win. Ziggy Reid led the team on 19 points.

PICK: I’m going to stay with Maine in this one. Granted, there’s not a lot to get excited about here. The Black Bears haven’t been scoring great lately; they’ve hit 67 or fewer points in three of their last four outings. As for Merrimack, they’re eclipsed 64 points just once in their last 11 games. The Warriors have struggled mightily against just about everyone this year, so Maine should have an open lane to a cover if they play well.
