The Central Michigan Chippewas and the Minnesota Golden Gophers meet Thursday in college basketball action from Williams Arena. Central Michigan is 1-1 on the year following a win over Eastern Illinois in their last outing. As for Minnesota, they’re 2-1 on the season. The Gophers lost to DePaul on Monday. Central Michigan took on Marquette in their first game of the 2022-23 campaign. The Chippewas struggled in a 47-29 first half, limping to a 97-73 loss. Jesse Zarzuela led the team on 17 points, and Brian Taylor added 15 points and nine boards.

Game two went much smoother for Central Michigan. The Chippewas had a 42-21 halftime lead on Eastern Illinois and held on for the 76-60 win. Kevin Miller topped the team with 23 points, while Markus Harding posted 19 points and eight boards.

Over on the Minnesota side, they began the year with a surprisingly close matchup against Western Michigan. Minnesota barely escaped with a 61-60 win. Game two against St. Francis BK wasn’t quite so dramatic; the Gophers took a 72-54 victory in that one.

Back on Monday versus DePaul, the Gophers were down 34-22 by halftime. Minnesota couldn’t recover in the second half and fell 69-53 for a pretty dismal outcome. Dawson Garcia was the high man on 19 points and six boards.

PICK: I’m going to try Central Michigan here. It’s a small sample size, but the Chippewas have been scoring pretty well through two games so far with 149 combined points. As for Minnesota, they’ve been choppy at best this season. The Gophers shot a cold 33.3 percent from the field in the loss to DePaul, getting out-rebounded 48-32 along the way. Central Michigan doesn’t have firepower like DePaul, but I still think they can stay in cover range.
