Mississippi State vs Nicholls State 12/17/22 College Basketball Picks, Predictions, Odds

The Nicholls State Colonels and the Mississippi State Bulldogs meet Saturday in college basketball action from Humphrey Coliseum. Nicholls State is coming off a Thursday matchup versus Southeastern Louisiana. In that one the Colonels took a 15-point victory. Nicholls State went just 1-4 over their first five games this year, beating only Jarvis Christian (TX). The Colonels bounced back in their next four however, taking wins over San Diego, Champion Christian and Rust. 

In the Southeastern Louisiana matchup on Thursday, Nicholls State was up 45-26 by halftime and ended up cruising to a win 88-73 after 43 second-half points. Caleb Huffman led the way on 17 points and three assists. 

Over on the Mississippi State side, they’re on a nice run so far. The wins have come courtesy of Texas A&M-CC, Akron, AR-Pine Bluff, South Dakota, Marquette, Utah, Omaha, MS Valley State, Minnesota and Jackson State. 

Matched up against Jackson State on Wednesday, the Bulldogs were up 31-26 going into the second half. Mississippi State scored 38 more points from there and won 69-59. Both Tolu Smith and Eric Reed led the way on 13 points apiece. 

PICK: I’ll probably stick with Mississippi State. The Bulldogs are doing great this year so far, however they’re also coming off something of a sketchy win over Jackson State. Mississippi State was out-rebounded 31-24 (11-9 offensive) in that one and had 16 turnovers. Still, the Bulldogs are chugging along with 69 or more points in four straight games. 

As for Nicholls State they’ve been scoring well lately with 71 or more points in five straight games. The Colonels could give Mississippi State some trouble if they’re playing well. This should be an interesting matchup.
