The Quinnipiac Bobcats and the Monmouth Hawks meet Thursday in college basketball action from Multipurpose Activity Center. Quinnipiac is 12-14 on the year so far. The Bobcats fell to Canisius in their last appearance. As for Monmouth, they’re sitting at 18-11 and coming off a loss to Siena. Quinnipiac was a decent 11-7 back on January 28, but things haven’t gone well since then. The Bobcats are 1-7 in the last eight, losing to Siena, Saint Peter’s, Monmouth, Manhattan, Marist, Siena and Canisius in that stretch.
In the Canisius game on Sunday, the Bobcats held a commanding 40-27 lead at halftime. Quinnipiac faded on a 27-45 run in the second and lost 72-67 in a tough one. Matt Balanc topped the team on his 22 points with eight rebounds.
Over on the Monmouth side, they’ve stayed fairly consistent the whole year—outside of a midseason 0-4 stretch. The Hawks are 2-2 in their last four; the wins were over Rider and Siena while the losses were versus Saint Peter’s and Siena.
In the rematch versus Siena on Sunday, the Hawks were down 31-33 by the break. Monmouth hit a 28-37 deficit from there and lost 70-59. Tops in scoring on the team was Walker Miller with his 15 points, three rebounds and one steal.
The Hawks are 1-6 ATS in their last seven at home and 5-2 ATS in their last seven Thursday games. Monmouth is 4-10 ATS in their last 14 after an ATS loss.
Meanwhile, the Bobcats are 2-6 ATS in their last eight overall and 1-4 ATS in their last five Thursday games. The under is 4-1 in Quinnipiac’s last five Thursday games.
PICK: I’m tentatively going with Monmouth. The Hawks need to get out of this scoring funk, though. Monmouth has scored 65 points or fewer in four of their last five games, going just 2-3 in that stretch. Generally the Hawks score better than that, but they do also rely on defense to win games.
The last time these teams met up, Monmouth managed a 76-63 road victory. The familiar surroundings should do the Hawks some good here, and I like them a little better on the cover.
