The McNeese State Cowboys and the New Orleans Privateers meet Thursday in Southland Tournament college basketball action from Merrell Center. McNeese State is 11-21 on the season. The Cowboys beat Northwestern State in tournament activity Wednesday. As for New Orleans, they’re 17-12 overall this year and coming off a loss to Nicholls. McNeese State has had a couple of decent stretches this season, but the team hasn’t strung together wins very well outside of a 5-3 run in January. Making matters worse, the Cowboys had a rough five-game losing streak to close out the regular season.

In the Wednesday tournament matchup versus Northwestern State, the Cowboys jumped out to a 43-23 advantage at the break. McNeese State put up 37 points from there in an 80-67 win. Kellon Taylor led the team with 22 points and six rebounds.

Over on the New Orleans side, they stumbled out of the gate on a 4-8 run but then hit a nice 12-1 stretch to get back over .500 on the year. It’s been a 1-3 stretch since then with losses to SE Louisiana, Northwestern State and Nicholls.

Matched up against Nicholls on Saturday, the Privateers were down 37-42 by halftime. New Orleans fell further behind in the second half on the way to a 92-85 loss. Derek St. Hilaire led the team on his 26 points and six boards.

PICK: I’m going to take a stab on McNeese State. The Cowboys were quite impressive Wednesday, shooting 50 percent from the field with 41 rebounds and 13 team assists. McNeese State has lost both matchups with the Privateers this year, but generally the Cowboys have been competitive lately despite their defeats.

As for New Orleans, they’ve been all over the place recently. If there’s good news the Privateers are still scoring very well. They’ve hit 70 or more points in a whopping 19 straight games, so this one’s likely to be a high-total affair. If the Cowboys can get going, it should be a fun matchup to watch.
