The West Virginia Mountaineers and the Portland State Vikings meet Friday in college basketball action from Moda Center. West Virginia is 4-1 overall this year. The Mountaineers lost to Purdue in their Thursday matchup. As for Portland State, they’re 2-3 on the season. The Vikings are coming off a loss to Gonzaga. West Virginia began their season with a 76-58 win over Mount Saint Mary’s and an 81-56 victory versus Pittsburgh. The Mountaineers beat Morehead State 75-57 then took out Penn 92-58 to move to 4-0.

In Thursday’s matchup versus Purdue, West Virginia trailed 43-32 going into the second half. The Mountaineers didn’t end up getting closer in an 80-68 loss. Erik Stevenson led the team on 17 points, and Joe Toussaint posted 16 points with five rebounds.

Over on the Portland State side, they took two losses to start out the season, falling 98-91 to Portland and 83-71 versus Seattle. The Vikings were able to even it up and get back to .500 with wins over Evergreen State 113-40 and Oregon State 79-66.

On Thursday versus Gonzaga, the Vikings were drilled 55-31 in the first half. Portland State kept the pace from there in a 102-78 loss. Jorell Saterfield led the team on 21 points, and Cameron Parker added 16 points with eight assists.

PICK: I might take a stab on Portland State. Probably not going near it, though. The Vikings allowed Gonzaga to do whatever they wanted in the Thursday game, giving up 60.3 percent shooting from the floor and 42 rebounds to the Bulldogs. Portland State should match up much better in this one and I like their offense to keep the team in it. The Vikings have 71 or more points in every game so far this year.

As for West Virginia, they weren’t able to keep up with a great Purdue team for long in the Thursday game, which was expected. The Mountaineers ended up shooting 41.3 percent from the floor and were competitive on the boards with a 36-34 rebounding deficit. This one should be closer but I don’t know if West Virginia will keep the cover pace.
