The Iona Gaels and the Rider Broncs meet Sunday in college basketball action from Rider University Alumni Gym. Iona is sitting at 23-5 overall this year. The Gaels put up a win over Canisius in their last game. As for Rider, they’re 11-16 and coming off a win over Niagara. Iona has stayed pretty consistent all year; the Gaels have only lost consecutive games twice this year. Since their last defeat, Iona has been on a four-game win streak over Monmouth, Saint Peter’s, Fairfield and Canisius.
In the Canisius game on Friday, the Gaels posted a 33-25 run in the first half. Iona was outscored 39-40 from there but held on for the 72-65 win. Tops in scoring were Tyson Jolly and Elijah Joiner with 16 points apiece and 11 combined boards.
Over on the Broncs’ side, they’ve had a few good stretches this season but haven’t been able to keep it together. Rider had a four-game win streak coming into the month, then lost to Siena, Monmouth and Manhattan before a win over Niagara.
Matched up against Niagara on Friday, the Broncs were up 29-21 by the break. Rider hit a 41-47 deficit in the second but were able to hang on for the 70-68 victory. The team’s leading scorer was Dwight Murray with 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
The Broncs are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 at home and 6-2 ATS in their last eight overall. The over is 4-1 in Rider’s last five at home.
Meanwhile, the Gaels are 2-5 ATS in their last seven at home and 1-4 ATS in their last five after an ATS loss. Iona is 2-6 ATS in their last eight overall.
PICK: I’m going to stay with Iona. The Gaels are rolling along well these days; they’ve hit 70 or more points in 12 of their last 13 outings and have held opponents to 65 points or fewer in four straight. The last time these teams met up was way back on December 3 in an 80-54 blowout home win for the Gaels. I like Rider to post a better total here, but this is probably still Iona’s cover to take.
