The Monmouth Hawks and the Saint Peter’s Peacocks meet Saturday in MAAC Tournament college basketball action from Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall. Monmouth is 21-12 on the season. The Hawks beat Rider in tournament activity on Friday. As for Saint Peter’s, they’re 18-11 overall and took out Quinnipiac in their Friday tournament game. Monmouth was 10-2 back in late December but the team has had trouble stringing together wins since then. The good news is that the Hawks are on a 3-1 run right now. They’ve taken out Quinnipiac, Niagara and Rider in that frame.

Matched up with Rider in the tournament game Friday, the Hawks were down 29-30 by halftime. Monmouth posted a 43-38 run the rest of the way for a comeback 72-68 win. Leading scorer George Papas put up 20 points with six rebounds.

Over on the Saint Peter’s side, their season began with a rough 3-6 run. There’s been vast improvement since mid-January though, despite a 1-3 run last month. The Peacocks are currently riding a six-game win streak over Monmouth, Niagara, Manhattan, Fairfield (twice) and Quinnipiac.

In Friday’s tournament game versus Quinnipiac, the Peacocks were down by a point at the break. Saint Peter’s outscored the Bobcats 34-21 from there and took a 64-52 win. Matthew Lee topped the scorers on 14 points, and KC Ndefo added 13 points with seven boards.

PICK: I’m probably going to try Saint Peter’s, but it’s close. The Peacocks are on a nice run right now and generally scoring well. Saint Peter’s won both matchups with Monmouth this year: 67-62 at home on January 14 and 70-65 in the February 25 road rematch. The Peacocks should have the advantage here especially if they can get off to a good start.

As for Monmouth, they’ve had some solid wins this year. The Hawks haven’t been all that consistent in the conference matchups, though. In four of the last six games, Monmouth has been at or below 65 points. They’re likely going to need a good offensive showing here, and I don’t know if the Hawks can keep the cover pace.
