The Eastern Washington Eagles and the Santa Clara Broncos meet Monday in college basketball action from Leavey Center. Eastern Washington is fresh off an 18-16 run last year, losing in the first round of the Basketball Classic. As for Santa Clara, they went 21-12 overall in 2021-22, ultimately losing in the First Round of the NIT. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.

Eastern Washington had quite the average season last year, going 18-16 overall and 11-9 in Big Sky Conference games. That would leave the Eagles in sixth place behind Montana State, Southern Utah, Northern Colorado, Weber State and Montana.

Eastern Washington had some trouble keeping the wins going last year. The Eagles failed to win more than two consecutive games until mid-February, where they won three straight. After a loss to Northern Colorado in the conference tourney, Eastern Washington lost to Fresno State in the Basketball Classic.

Over on the Santa Barbara side, they managed some relevance last year with a 21-12 overall run and a 10-5 mark in West Coast Conference matchups. The Broncos hit third place in the standings behind Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s.

The Broncos only lost consecutive games once during conference play last year (Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s), and they toppled Portland in the first game of the WCC Tournament. Santa Clara would fall to Saint Mary’s in the next game, then lose to Washington State in the First Round of the NIT.

The Eagles are 5-1 ATS in their last six Monday games and 37-14-1 ATS in their last 52 road games. Santa Clara is 6-1 ATS in their last seven at home and 5-1 ATS in their last six overall.

PICK: I’m going to try Eastern Washington here. This is something of a coin-flip matchup however, as both teams could very well be sleeper picks for big seasons in 2022-23. Eastern Washington retains three big pieces in Steele Venters (16.7 PPG), Angelo Allegri (12.1 PPG) and Ethan Price (9.9 PPG) from last year’s squad. If that trio can stay healthy and consistent all season, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Eagles battling it out with Montana State near the top of the conference standings.
