The Wagner Seahawks and the Temple Owls meet Monday in college basketball action from Liacouras Center. Wagner managed to go 21-6 overall and earn a second-place finish in the Northeast Conference standings. As for Temple, they hit a 17-12 overall run last year, landing in fourth place in the AAC. Wagner improved on their 2020-21 campaign last year, going 21-6 overall with a solid 15-3 run in the Northeast Conference games. That put the Seahawks in second place in the standings, behind Bryant by one game and ahead of LIU by three games.
The Seahawks finished off non-conference play at 6-2 amid what would turn into a 16-game win streak. Wagner limped the the finish line at 2-3 over their last five games, then beat Saint Francis and LIU in the conference tourney before a loss to Bryant in the championship.
Over on the Temple side, they made a marked improvement over their previous campaign last year as well, going 17-12 overall and 10-7 in American Athletic Conference games. The Owls finished in fourth place behind Houston, SMU and Memphis.
Temple started out the year on a sketchy 7-6 run but evened out pretty well around mid-season. The Owls hit a 2-2 run to finish off the regular season, then fell to Tulane 69-60 in their first game of the AAC Tournament.
The Seahawks are 4-0 ATS in their last four Modnay games and 1-5 ATS in their last six road games. Temple is 5-1 ATS in the last six at home and the under is 14-5-1 in their last 20 overall.
PICK: I’m probably going to stick with Temple here. Some pundits are predicting the Owls to be a sleeper contender this year and challenge for one of the top spots in the AAC. I wouldn’t quite go that far, but Temple does have the goods for at least another top-five finish this season. Khalif Battle will be a key factor here; he averaged 21.4 PPG through seven games last year before a foot injury shelved him for good. If the rest of the team can rally around a healthy Battle, good things are in store for the Owls in 2022-23.
