The Minnesota Golden Gophers and the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels meet Wednesday in college basketball action from JSerra Pavilion. Minnesota enters this one at 4-1 overall this year. The Gophers are coming off a win over California Baptist. As for UNLV, they’re sitting at 5-0 and fresh off a win versus Southern Illinois. Minnesota was able to eke out a win over Western Michigan 61-60 in their opener this year. The Gophers followed that up with a 72-54 win over St. Francis BK and a 69-53 loss to DePaul. Minnesota beat Central Michigan 68-60 in game four.
In Monday’s matchup versus California Baptist, the Gophers had a 26-18 lead at halftime. Minnesota needed overtime to carve out a 62-61 win, however. Pharrel Payne doubled up to lead the team on 15 points and 13 boards.
Over on the UNLV side, they took out Southern U 66-56 in their opener, then beat Incarnate Word 88-63. The Rebels kept it going with wins over Dayton 60-52 and High Point 78-68 in their next two outings.
In the game versus Southern Illinois, UNLV trailed 30-26 at halftime. The Rebels stormed back with a 30-19 run from there in a 56-49 win. Keshon Gilbert was tops on 18 points and Elijah Harkless added 16 points.
PICK: I’m going to take a stab on UNLV. The Rebels are off to a great 5-0 start so far, and this should serve as a solid barometer on where the team is right now. UNLV shot 45.1 percent from the floor against Southern Illinois in their Tuesday win, but were out-rebounded 29-22 and had just six assists. Minnesota has been decent on the boards this year (40 against Cal Baptist) so if the Gophers can control the ball they could make some trouble for UNLV.
