Appalachian State vs Coastal Carolina 1/5/23 College Basketball Picks, Predictions, Odds

The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers and the Appalachian State Mountaineers meet Thursday in college basketball action from Holmes Center. Coastal Carolina comes into this one at 7-6 overall. The Chanticleers lost to Georgia Southern in their last game. As for Appalachian State, they’re 7-8 on the year after a loss to Southern Miss on Saturday. Coastal Carolina went 6-4 over their first 10 games, losing to USC Upstate, Missouri, UNCW and Wofford. Since then it’s been a 1-2 run with a win over Louisiana between losses to Charleston and Georgia Southern. 

In the Georgia Southern game, the Chanticleers were down 37-36 at halftime. Coastal Carolina was outscored 36-28 from there and lost 73-64. Essam Mostafa doubled on 15 points with 13 rebounds, and Antonio Daye had 15 points. 

Over on the Appalachian State side, they were 6-4 after 10 games as well with losses to Campbell, Kennesaw State, Furman and Charlotte. The Mountaineers are 1-4 since then with losses to Wake Forest, UCSB, Marshall and Southern Miss. 

Matched up against Southern Miss on Saturday, the Mountaineers took a 33-30 lead into the break. App State hit a 46-37 deficit from there and lost 76-70. Chris Mantis was the top scorer with 13 points and four rebounds. 

PICK: I’m going to stay with Coastal Carolina. Probably not going near it, though; we should have a competitive matchup here. The Chanticleers have had a couple of tough matchups lately, but the good news is that they’ve scored 69 or more points in four of their last five outings. Appalachian State, meanwhile, has given up 155 combined points in their last two games. Coastal Carolina should have some scoring opportunities here, but it also figures to be a close game.
