The Saint Mary’s Gaels and the BYU Cougars meet Saturday in college basketball action from Marriott Center. Saint Mary’s is sitting at 18-4 overall this year. The Gaels beat Santa Clara in their last game. As for BYU, they’re 14-9 and coming off a loss to San Francisco. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.

Saint Mary’s Gaels

Saint Mary’s got off to a 12-4 start through 16 games this year, losing to only Washington, New Mexico, Houston and Colorado State. The Gaels have beaten Art U, Portland, LMU, San Francisco, Pepperdine and Santa Clara in the last six outings.

Last weekend versus Santa Clara, the Gaels went into the locker room with a 36-29 edge. Saint Mary’s rolled in the second with a 41-29 advantage and won 77-58. Aidan Mahaney led the charge on 20 points and two rebounds.

BYU Cougars

Over on the BYU side, they lost to San Diego State, Butler, USC, South Dakota and Utah Valley in their first 16 games. The Cougars are 3-4 since then however, with losses to LMU, Gonzaga, Santa Clara and San Francisco.

In last Saturday’s San Francisco game, the Cougars trailed 37-28 going into the second half. BYU managed a 46-45 run from there but still lost 82-74. Rudi Williams was tops in scoring with 28 points and two assists.

I’ll probably stick with Saint Mary’s in this one. The Gaels made short work of a pretty good Santa Clara team in their last outing. Saint Mary’s has scored 73 or more points in seven games during this nine-game win streak. As for BYU, they’ve been a mixed bag in the win column lately. That said, the Cougars are still scoring pretty well; 68 or more points in five straight games. Ultimately I don’t think they’ll keep pace with Saint Mary’s, though.
