Ohio State Buckeyes

Ohio State managed a rough 11-13 run over their first 24 outings of the season. The Buckeyes finished off the schedule on a 2-5 stretch, falling to Michigan State, Iowa, Penn State, Purdue and Michigan State again. Ohio State beat Wisconsin 65-57 and Iowa 73-69 in the first two rounds of the Big Ten Tournament.

On Friday in the tournament game versus Michigan State, Ohio State was up 33-24 going into the break. The Buckeyes maintained form on a 35-34 run from there and won 68-58. Bruce Thornton was the top team scorer on 21 points and six assists.

Purdue Boilermakers

Over on the Purdue side, they were a nice 22-2 at the 24-game mark this year. The Boilermakers hit a 4-3 run to finish off the regular-season slate, beating Iowa, Ohio State, Wisconsin and Illinois with losses to Northwestern, Maryland and Indiana.

In the Big Ten Tournament game against Rutgers on Friday, Purdue held a slim 29-28 edge going into the second half. The Boilermakers hit a 41-37 run the rest of the way and took the victory 70-65. Leading scorer Mason Gillis put up 20 points with nine rebounds.

ANDREW’S FREE PICK

I might take a stab on Ohio State here. The Buckeyes finished off the regular season on a 2-1 stretch with a six-point loss to Michigan State as the lone blemish. The Buckeyes have been impressive through the first three games of the tournament, holding opponents to 58 points or fewer in two of those matchups. As for Purdue, they’re sitting on a three-game win streak but haven’t won by more than five points in any of those outings. The Boilermakers are a relatively sketchy 4-3 in their last seven as well. These teams have met twice before this season, with Purdue taking wins both times. January 5 was a 71-69 road victory and February 19 was an 82-55 home blowout. If the Buckeyes continue to play like they have in the last trio, I think they can hang around with Purdue. Should be a very interesting matchup.
