Utah State Aggies
Utah State held a nice 19-5 record over the first 24 games of the season. The Aggies went 5-2 down the stretch, beating Air Force, Nevada, Wyoming, UNLV and Boise State. Utah State would then take out New Mexico 91-76 in Thursday tournament action.
In Friday’s tournament matchup versus Boise State, the Aggies were down 36-28 going into the second half. Utah State rallied on a 44-26 run from there and took the comeback win 72-62 to move on.
San Diego State Aztecs
Over on the San Diego State side, they were 19-5 on the season at the 24-game mark. The Aztecs would beat UNLV, Fresno State, Colorado State, New Mexico and Wyoming over the next six games, then Colorado State in the first game of the tournament 64-61.
On Friday in the San Jose State matchup, the Aztecs were up comfortably 33-20 at halftime. San Diego State kept it going with a 31-29 second half and won 64-49. Keshad Johnson and Darrion Trammell each scored a team-high 15 points in the victory.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll probably stay with San Diego State in this one. The Aztecs are on a nice roll defensively right now, giving up 66 or fewer points in four straight games and 61 or fewer in each of the last three. San Diego State is 9-1 in their last 10 games and playing well. As for Utah State, they’re on a nice seven-game win streak right now, scoring 72 or more points in six of those matchups. These teams have met twice already this year, with San Diego State taking the win each time. The Aztecs won 85-75 at home on January 25, then 63-61 on February 8 at Smith Spectrum. I like the Aggies to put up a good fight again in this one, but ultimately I think San Diego State will take care of business.
