Utah Tech Trailblazers
Utah Tech managed an 11-13 record over their first 24 games of the year. The Trailblazers finished off the regular season schedule on a rough 2-5 run, losing to Seattle, Tarleton State, Southern Utah, TX-Arlington and Grand Canyon in that time.
On Tuesday in the WAC Tournament matchup versus Stephen F. Austin, the Trailblazers scored 31 points in the first half, 31 in the second and 18 in overtime for an 80-76 victory. Leading team scorer Cameron Gooden posted 22 points with five assists.
Southern Utah Thunderbirds
Over on the Southern Utah side, they stood at 16-8 by the 24-game mark this season. The Thunderbirds’ last seven games have been a 4-3 run with wins over Tarleton State, Utah Tech, TX-Arlington and Cal Baptist alongside losses to Utah Valley, Grand Canyon and Sam Houston.
In the Friday matchup versus Cal Baptist, the Thunderbirds were up 44-39 going into the second half. Southern Utah posted a 37-32 run the rest of the way for an 81-71 victory. Jason Spurgin led the team on 20 points with three rebounds.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll probably take a stab on Utah Tech here. The Trailblazers are a rough 3-2 in their last five outings, but just one of those losses was by more than two points. Utah Tech has scored 69 or more points in 13 of their last 14 games and should post a decent total in this one as well. These teams have met twice already this year, with the home team taking the win in each. First was a February 4 Utah Tech win 86-79 at Burns Arena, then an 81-71 Thunderbirds victory from Centrum Arena Utah. Southern Utah has been scoring quite well lately themselves, so it’ll take a big offensive push for Utah Tech to keep pace. I think the Trailblazers will pull it off, though.
