Troy vs Old Dominion 1/5/23 College Basketball Picks, Predictions, Odds

The Old Dominion Monarchs and the Troy Trojans meet Thursday in college basketball action from Trojan Arena. Old Dominion is 9-5 on the year so far. The Monarchs beat Louisiana in their last game. Old Dominion went 6-4 overall during their first 10 games, losing to Drexel, Virginia Tech, Davidson and Charleston. Since then it’s been a 3-1 run with wins over Gardner-Webb, George Mason and Louisiana. 

In the Louisiana game on Saturday, the Monarchs jumped out to a 38-24 halftime lead. Old Dominion was outscored 42-32 in the second half but still hung on for the 70-66 win. Tyreek Scott-Grayson led the team on 17 points with seven rebounds. 

Over on the Troy side, they went 6-4 over their first 10 games with losses to St. Thomas MN, Arkansas, SIUE and San Diego State. The Trojans are 3-2 since then with wins over Tennessee Tech, SE Louisiana and Texas State. 

Matched up against Texas State on Saturday, the Trojans trailed by two points going into the second half. Troy was able to hit a 35-30 run from there and win it 55-52 in comeback fashion. Kieffer Punter put up 16 points with three rebounds in the victory. 

PICK: I’ll probably stick with Old Dominion. You could make a case either way here, though; it’ll be a good matchup. That said, the Monarchs have been a mixed bag on the scoreboard lately, cracking 68 points in just three of their last six outings. Old Dominion is 5-1 in that stretch however, as they’ve held opponents to 66 points or fewer in five of the six as well. As for Troy, they’ve got some decent points totals in the books this year but they’ve cooled off lately with 115 combined points over their last pair. If ODU gets going in this one I don’t think the Trojans can keep a cover pace. Should be a great game though.
