Colorado posted a 7-5 run to kick off the year, losing to Grambling State, UMass, Boise State, Arizona State and Washington. The Buffaloes hit a 4-1 stretch after that with wins over Stanford, Southern Utah, Oregon and Oregon State.
On Thursday versus USC, the Buffaloes were down by two points at halftime. Colorado didn’t end up getting any closer on a 34-29 second-half deficit and lost 68-61. KJ Simpson scored 17 points, and Lawson Lovering doubled on 13 points and 14 boards.
Over on the UCLA side, they were 10-2 after 12 games this year. The only losses came to Illinois and Baylor. The Bruins would win their next four games over UC Davis, Washington State, Washington and USC.
In the Utah matchup on Thursday, the Bruins were up 31-22 going into the second half. UCLA posted a 37-27 run from there and won it 68-49. Tyger Campbell led the team on 17 points and Jaime Jaquez notched 12 rebounds with eight points.
PICK: I’ll probably stick with UCLA. The Bruins are on a nice 12-game win streak right now. UCLA has hit 67 or more points in six of their last eight games and should post a solid total in this one as well. Colorado has scored a combined 123 points in their last two outings but they’re capable of putting up some nice offensive outings themselves when the matchup is right. That said, I don’t think the Buffaloes will be able to keep pace for long in this one if UCLA is on point.
