The South Alabama Jaguars and the Appalachian State Mountaineers meet Saturday in college basketball action from Holmes Center. South Alabama is fresh off a Thursday matchup versus Coastal Carolina. The Jaguars ended up winning that one by three points. As for App State, they played Troy in their Thursday game. The Mountaineers would go on to lose by six. South Alabama has had a mostly successful season thus far. They were sitting at a solid 15-5 back in late January after 20 games. The Jaguars lost to Troy, Georgia Southern and Georgia State, but then hit wins over Little Rock and Arkansas State.
On Thursday in the matchup versus Coastal Carolina, South Alabama posted a 31-28 edge in the first half. The Jaguars kept the pace going from there in a 71-68 win. Jay Jay Chandler led the team with his 17 points and eight assists.
Over on the Appalachian State side, they were sitting at 6-8 as the calendar year began but things have gotten much better since then. The Mountaineers started out February on a 2-2 clip however, with losses to Texas State and Georgia State.
Matched up against Troy on Thursday, the Mountaineers maintained a two-point lead in the first half. App State was outscored 22-30 from there in a 67-61 loss. Adrian Delph and Donovan Gregory each notched 17 points with a combined 10 boards.
The Mountaineers are 4-1 ATS in their last five Saturday games and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 overall. The under is 5-2 in App State’s last seven overall.
Meanwhile, the Jags are 4-1 ATS in their last five after an ATS win and 5-1 ATS in their last six after a straight-up win. The under is 4-1 in South Alabama’s last five overall.
PICK: I’m going to take a stab on South Alabama. The Jaguars had a few rough showings in their recent three-game losing streak, but they’ve cleaned it up over the last trio. South Alabama has hit 70 or more in each of those victories. As for App State, they managed a 72-64 road win the last time these teams met up back on January 6. I like this one to be a competitive, high-scoring matchup with South Alabama powering out a revenge cover/win. Should be a good one to watch.
