New Mexico State kicked off the year with a 2-1 run featuring wins over NM Highlands and San Diego. The Aggies would then lose to UC Irvine, beat UTEP and Simon Fraser then fall in a close one to Santa Clara.

Back on Wednesday versus Santa Clara, the Aggies took a 36-33 edge into the break. New Mexico State couldn’t hold it however and lost 66-65. Deshawndre Washington led the team on 20 points with eight rebonds and five assists.

Over on the Duquesne side, they went 7-1 over their first eight games this year. The Dukes lost to Kentucky but otherwise beat Montana, SC State, Colgate, North Florida, Alabama State, UCSB and Ball State.

Duquesne took their second loss of the year on Thursday versus Marshall. The Dukes were drilled 46-27 in the first half and ended up with an 82-71 loss. Jimmy Clark posted 19 points in the defeat and Dae Dae Grant had 18 points.

PICK: I’m going to stick with Duquesne. The Dukes are reeling right now after a tough loss to a good Marshall team. That said, Duquesne has been playing pretty well overall this season. The Dukes have scored 71 or more points in eight of their nine outings so far. As for New Mexico State, they’ve had their ups and downs this year but they can score pretty well themselves when they’re on point. That said I don’t think they’ll catch Duquesne.
