The Sacred Heart Pioneers and the Fairfield Stags meet Wednesday in college basketball action from Leo D. Mahoney Arena. Sacred Heart is 5-4 this year and coming off a loss to UMass Lowell. As for Fairfield, they’re 3-6 on the season. The Stags beat Saint Peter’s in their last game. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.

Sacred Heart posted a 2-2 record out of the gate with wins over Hartford and Columbia. The Pioneers went 3-1 in their next four, beating Binghamton, Western New England and New Hampshire in that time.

Back on Saturday versus UMass Lowell, Sacred Heart was down 27-17 by halftime. The Pioneers scored 42 points from there but still lost 70-59. Bryce Johnson managed to double up in that one with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Over on the Fairfield side, they started out the year at 0-4 with losses to Wake Forest, New Hampshire, Xavier and Wagner. The Stags went 2-2 over their next quartet, managing wins over Towson and Evansville.

Fairfield got back into the win column again on Saturday versus Saint Peter’s. The Stags scored 29 points in the first half and 38 more in the second for a 67-55 win. Tops in scoring was Caleb Fields with 19 points and four boards.

PICK: I’ll stick with Sacred Heart in this one. Probably not touching it, thoug. The Pioneers are coming off a tough matchup versus UMass Lowell and couldn’t recover after the rough first half. Sacred Heart is capable of putting up points against comparable teams, however; they’ve hit 75 or more points in six of nine games so far. As for Fairfield, they’ve been playing better lately and could put up a decent fight here. I still like Sacred Heart a little better cover-wise, though.
