Cal Poly Mustangs

Cal Poly has had a rough year, going just 7-18 through their first 25 outings. The Mustangs completed the regular season with a losing stretch versus CSU Northridge, CSU Bakersfield, CSU Fullerton, UC Irvine, UC Davis and UC Riverside.

Matched up against UC Riverside back on Saturday, Cal Poly scored 29 points in the first half, 33 in the second and 10 in overtime during a tough loss 73-72. Leading the way was Brantly Stevenson with 32 points and four rebounds.

LBSU Beach

Over on the Long Beach State side, they went 14-10 over their first 24 games of the year. The Beach finished things off on a 3-5 run, taking losses to UC Santa Barbara, UC Riverside, Hawaii, UC Santa Barbara again and UC Davis in that time.

In the Saturday game versus UC Davis, the Beach came back from a 39-29 halftime deficit to force overtime. After two extra periods, Long Beach State ended up with a 93-92 defeat. Lassina Traore led the team on a double-double with 22 points and 20 rebounds.

ANDREW’S FREE PICK

I might take a stab on Cal Poly here. Probably staying away from this one, though. The Mustangs have had a rough year to say the least. They’re riding an 18-game losing streak, but the good news is that they’ve been within six points in each of their last three defeats. Long Beach State didn’t have too many issues winning both matchups between these teams this year: 77-58 at home on January 12 and 70-52 on January 26 at Mott Athletic Center. The Beach have scored very well pretty much all season. That said, I think the Mustangs can eke into a cover if they play well in this tournament matchup.
