The Vanderbilt Commodores and the LSU Tigers meet Wednesday in college basketball action from Pete Maravich Assembly Center. Vanderbilt is 15-12 so far this year. The Commodores bat Auburn in their last game. As for LSU, they’re sitting at 12-15 after a loss to South Carolina over the weekend. Vanderbilt Commodores

The Commodores got off to a .500 start this year, going 10-10 over their first 20 games. Since then Vanderbilt is 5-2 with wins over Ole Miss, Tennessee, Florida, South Carolina and Auburn after losses to Texas A&M and Alabama.

In the Auburn matchup on Saturday, the Commodores led 31-27 going into the break. Vanderbilt had to scramble in the second half on a 38-36 deficit but still won 67-65. Liam Robbins doubled up on 24 points and 12 rebounds in the victory.

LSU Tigers

Over on the LSU side, they were sitting at 12-8 overall at the 20-game mark. It’s been a string of losses since then, however. The Tigers have fallen to Texas Tech, Missouri, Alabama, Mississippi State, Texas A&M, Georgia and South Carolina in their last seven outings.

Matched up against South Carolina on Saturday, the Tigers took a 36-31 deficit into the break. LSU was outscored 46-42 from there and fell 82-73. Cam Hayes led the team with his 25 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

ANDREW’S FREE PICK

I’ll probably stick with Vanderbilt in this one. The Commodores are looking good over this five-game win streak; there have been a couple of close calls against some tough teams but Vanderbilt has taken care of business. As for LSU, they’re moving in the wrong direction. The Tigers haven’t recorded a win since December 28 versus Arkansas: a span of 14 straight games. That said, I do like LSU to be competitive at home here. The Tigers are still competitive against comparable teams. I think Vanderbilt ultimately takes the cover/win, though.
