Northern Arizona Lumberjacks

Northern Arizona managed a rough 7-19 run over their first 26 games this year. The Lumberjacks finished the regular season on a 2-3 stretch, but then beat Idaho 87-76 and and Eastern Washington 81-80 in the first two rounds of the Big Sky Tournament.

Matched up against Montana in game three on Tuesday, Northern Arizona went into the break with a 34-32 deficit. The Lumberjacks hit a 51-37 run in the second for the comeback win 83-71. Jalen Cone put up 28 points with two assists to lead the team.

Montana State Bobcats

Over on the Montana State side, they managed to go 16-8 through 24 games. The Bobcats beat Northern Colorado, Idaho State, Montana, Sacramento State, Portland State and Eastern Washington to close out the year before a Sunday tournament win over Northern Colorado.

In Tuesday’s tournament matchup versus Weber State, the bobcats scored 24 points in the first half, 24 in the second and 12 points across two overtime periods for a 60-58 thriller victory. RaeQuan Battle led the team with 17 points and one rebound in the win.

ANDREW’S FREE PICK

I might take a stab on Northern Arizona here. The Lumberjacks are barreling through this conference tournament—they’ve taken out a 10-seed, a one-seed and a four-seed in three games so far, scoring 81 or more points in each game. That makes five straight games with 81 or more points for Northern Arizona, and six straight with 72 or more points. It’s been quite a turnaround since mid-February. These teams have met twice already, with Montana State taking the win both times. First was a 69-54 road win on January 7, then a 69-68 victory at Worthington Arena on February 2. I like this one to be another competitive matchup, with the Lumberjacks right in the thick of things the whole way.
