Rutgers beat Columbia, Sacred Heart and UMass Lowell in their first three games this year before a loss to Temple. The Scarlet Knights would go on to beat Rider and Central CT State, then take a loss to Miami FL.
On Saturday versus Indiana, Rutgers bounced back with a big win. The Knights took a 31-24 edge into the half and eventually managed a 63-48 victory. Top scorer Caleb McConnell doubled up with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Over on the Ohio State side, they beat Robert Morris, Charleston Southern and Eastern Illinois before a loss to San Diego State. The Buckeyes won versus Cincinnati and Texas Tech in the next pair, then fell to Duke.
In their Saturday matchup against St. Francis PA, the Buckeyes scored 44 points in the first half and 52 more in the second for a blowout win 96-59. Brice Sensabaugh led the team on 15 points, and Felix Okpara doubled on 10 points with 12 boards.
PICK: I’m likely going to stay with Ohio State. This should be an interesting matchup, though. The Buckeyes needed a big performance in their last game, and they got it. Ohio State posted 50.7 percent shooting from the field, 56.5 percent (13-of-23) from 3-point range, 47 rebounds and 20 assists against St. Francis PA. It was a solid bounce-back effort but there’s still plenty left to prove. The good news is that Ohio State has scored well this year with 72 or more points in seven of eight games.
As for Rutgers, they put the clamps down on Indiana in their last game, out-rebounding the Hoosiers 47-33. The Knights shot just 36.7 percent from the floor, however. That said, I like Rutgers to post a competitive outing here as Ohio State ekes through with a cover. Should be a fun game.
