Southern Miss Golden Eagles

Southern Mississippi managed to go a nice 16-4 over their first 20 games this year. The Golden Eagles have won seven more since then versus James Madison, Arkansas State, Texas State, Troy, Georgia State, Louisiana and LA-Monroe.

In the LA-Monroe matchup on Saturday, the Eagles were down 33-31 going into the second half. Southern Miss woke up on a 45-34 run from there and won 76-67. Leading scorer Felipe Haase posted 23 points with four assists in the victory.

South Alabama Jaguars

Over on the South Alabama side, they stood at a sketchy 8-12 at the 20-game mark this year. The Jaguars are 5-2 in their last seven outings though, beating Troy, Arkansas State, LA-Monroe, App State and Hartford in that time.

On Monday versus Hartford, the Jaguars were up 38-27 by halftime. South Alabama kept it up in the second half with a 39-26 run and took the blowout win 77-53. Isaiah Moore scored 20 points and Kevin Samuel doubled on 13 points and 10 rebounds in that one.

ANDREW’S FREE PICK

I’ll take a stab on South Alabama in this one. The Jaguars have certainly had their ups and downs this year, but they’re playing better basketball over this current 5-1 stretch. The last time these teams met up back on January 19 at Reed Green Coliseum, the Golden Eagles powered out a 76-72 victory. Southern Miss came back from a 37-33 halftime deficit in that one, so South Alabama is certainly capable of being competitive here. If the Jaguars get off to another good start I think they’ve got a great shot at a cover/win in the home rematch.
