Grand Canyon Antelopes

Grand Canyon opened up the year on a 14-8 clip through their first 22 games. The Antelopes are 4-3 in the last seven with wins over Stephen F. Austin, New Mexico State, Abilene Christian and Park Gilbert alongside losses to Seattle, UTRGV and Seattle again.

In the rematch versus the Redhawks on Friday, the Antelopes were outscored 26-13 in the first half. Grand Canyon got better on 41 second-half points but still lost 65-54. Rayshon Harrison led the team on 19 points and Gabe McGlothan doubled with 12 points and 10 boards.

Southern Utah Thunderbirds

Over on the Southern Utah side, they were a similar 15-7 through their first 22 outings this year. In the seven since, the Thunderbirds are 4-3 as well with wins over California Baptist, Tarleton State, Utah Tech and Texas-Arlington along the way.

On Saturday versus Sam Houston, the Thunderbirds had a 28-28 tie in the locker room. Southern Utah was outscored 36-29 from there and lost 64-57. Tevian Jones was the team’s high scorer on 15 points and seven rebounds.

ANDREW’S FREE PICK

I’ll stick with Southern Utah in this one. The Thunderbirds are coming off a sketchy second half against a good Sam Houston State team but they’d been on a pretty decent run before that. Southern Utah had 72 or more points in seven straight games prior to that defeat. As for Grand Canyon, they’ve scored 76 or more points in three of their last four games and should put up a pretty solid offensive effort in this one. I like a competitive and fairly high-scoring game here, but I’m leaning slightly toward the Thunderbirds cover-wise.
