The UConn Huskies and the St. John’s Red Storm meet Sunday in college basketball action from Madison Square Garden. UConn is sitting at 16-7 overall this year. The Huskies lost to Xavier in their last game. As for St. John’s, they’re currently 13-10 and coming off a loss to Villanova. UConn posted a 15-4 run to start the year, taking losses to only Michigan State, West Virginia, Providence and Seton Hall. Since then it’s been a 1-3 run for the Huskies, though. They’ve lost to Creighton, Villanova and Xavier in that time.
In Friday’s matchup versus Xavier, UConn was down by three points by the break. The Huskies were outscored 37-40 from there in a 74-68 loss. Tops in scoring was RJ Cole, with 22 points and three rebounds. Tyrese Martin added 18 points as well.
Over on the St. John’s side, their year began on a 9-3 run through 12 games. The Red Storm would then hit a 2-6 stretch before wins over Georgetown and Butler. In their last game on Tuesday, St. John’s lost again to Villanova.
Matched up against Villanova on Tuesday, the Storm were outscored by six points in the first half. St. John’s kept the pace from there but still lost 75-69. Aaron Wheeler led the team with his 31 points and seven rebounds.
The Storm are 3-10 ATS in their last 13 at home and 4-1 ATS in the last five Sunday games. The under is 5-2 in St. John’s last seven at home.
Meanwhile, the Huskies are 1-4 ATS in their last five overall and 5-2 ATS in their last seven after an ATS loss. The over is 5-1 in UConn’s last six road games.
PICK: I’m going to take a stab on St. John’s here. The Red Storm are a sketchy 3-3 over their last half-dozen games but they’ve still been scoring pretty well. St. John’s has 69 or more points in five of those six outings. The last time these teams met up was back on January 12. In that one UConn secured an 86-78 overtime win at home. I like this rematch to be another close and competitive affair, with the added glamour of the Garden. Should be a fun matchup, and I like the Red Storm to power out a cover.
