California managed a 9-5 run over the first 14 games of the season. The Bears have struggled in the 2021 calendar year, however. They’re 0-7 in the last seven outings with losses to USC, UCLA, Washington, Washington State, Arizona, UCLA and USC.
Matched up against USC on Saturday, the Bears were down 41-35 by halftime and limped to a 79-72 defeat. Tops in scoring was Makale Foreman with 13 points. Andre Kelly and Jalen Celestine each scored 12 points with five rebounds apiece as well.
Over on the Stanford side, they hit a 10-4 run out of the gate with losses to Santa Clara, Baylor, Colorado and Texas. It’s been a 6-3 stretch since then for the Cardinal. They’ve fallen to Washington, Arizona and UCLA in that time.
In the UCLA game on Saturday, the Cardinal were blown out 37-18 in the first half and 29-25 from there in a 66-43 defeat. Stanford’s Isa Silva managed eight points, while both James Keefe and Jaiden Declaire added seven points apiece.
The Cardinal are 1-4 ATS in the last five overall and 1-4-1 ATS in their last six Tuesday games. Stanford is 3-7-1 ATS in their last 11 after an ATS loss.
Meanwhile, the Bears are 14-6 ATS in their last 20 overall and 1-4 ATS in the last five after an ATS win. The under is 6-2 in Cal’s last eight after an ATS win.
PICK: I’m going to try Stanford here. The Cardinal are coming off a limp effort against UCLA one the weekend, but considering how good the Bruins are it’s not necessarily that surprising. Stanford has otherwise looked pretty solid during this 6-3 stretch; they’ve beaten a great USC team twice during that time.
As for California, their 0-7 streak has been tough. The Bears have posted more than 63 points just twice in those games. This matchup with Stanford should be very competitive and a fun one to watch. Ultimately I think the Cardinal can power out the cover, though.
