The South Alabama Jaguars and the Tarleton Texans meet in college basketball action from the Wisdom Gym on Friday night.
The South Alabama Jaguars come into this game looking to sweep the home and home with Tarleton after a 69-62 win over the Texans last time out. Charles Manning Jr. leads the Jaguars in scoring and assists with 17.1 PPG and 3.2 APG while Jay Jay Chandler has 14.3 PPG and 4.4 RPG. Javon Franklin has 10.5 PPG and a team-high 6.6 RPG to lead the Jaguars on the glass and to cap off the group of double-digit scorers for South Alabama up to this point in the season. As a team, South Alabama is averaging 76.3 PPG on 46.5% shooting from the field, 31.7% from three and 68.7% from the foul line while allowing 59.9 PPG on 39.9% shooting from the field and 29.5% from three this season.
The Tarleton Texans will try to get some measure of revenge after their loss to the Jaguars in their last game. Tahj Small leads the Texans in scoring and rebounding with 14.3 PPG and 5.7 RPG while Montre Gipson has 14 PPG with 4.5 RPG as the only other double-digit scorer for Tarleton so far this season. Shakur Daniel also has a team-high 2.4 APG as well this season. As a team, Tarleton is averaging 61.6 PPG on 40.5% shooting from the field, 25.4% from three and 76.5% from the foul line while allowing 64.4 PPG on 43.4% shooting from the field and 31.3% from three this season.
South Alabama is 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games overall and 8-2 ATS in their last 10 road games while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 games following a win. Tarleton is 7-3-1 ATS in their last 11 games overall and 1-5-1 ATS in their last 7 games against a team with a winning percentage above .600 while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 home games.
The concern that I was having with the Jaguars was that we saw they could cover on the road with a big number of points, but what could happen against a team with a tighter spread and what the Jaguars did to answer that question was not only cover, but win the game outright. Tarleton just hasn’t had the consistent enough success to consider them to get revenge on the Jaguars here in my opinion, so I’ll lay the bucket with South Alabama here.
