Vanderbilt Commodores

The Commodores got through their first 24 games at .500 with a 12-12 run. Vanderbilt hit a nice 6-1 stretch from there with wins over Florida, South Carolina, Auburn, Florida, Kentucky and Mississippi State. The Commodores would then beat LSU in their first tournament matchup.

On Friday in the tournament game against Kentucky, Vanderbilt took a 39-34 edge into the second half. The Commodores posted a 41-39 run in the second during an 80-73 victory. Ezra Manjon was tops on 25 points with three assists in the win.

Texas A&M Aggies

Over on the Texas A&M side, they were 17-7 by the 24-game mark this year. The Aggies managed wins over LSU, Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, Ole Miss and Alabama in their final seven outings. The lone loss came to Mississippi State otherwise.

Matched up against Arkansas on Friday in tournament activity, the Aggies were down 38-25 in the locker room. Texas A&M rallied from there on a 42-23 edge and won 67-61. Wade Taylor led the team with 18 points and Henry Coleman doubled on 16 points and 11 rebounds.

ANDREW’S FREE PICK

I might take a stab on Vanderbilt. The Commodores pulled off a great upset win over Kentucky on Friday, shooting 49.1 percent from the field with 18-of-20 (90 percent) from the line. That makes five straight victories for Vanderbilt with 77 or more points in four of those matchups. As for Texas A&M, they didn’t play particularly well in the first half against Arkansas on Friday, but ended up with a nice 43-26 rebounding advantage (17-8 offensive) in the victory. The Aggies shot just 10 percent (1-of-10) from 3-point range and coughed up 15 turnovers, however. These teams last met up back on January 28 in a 72-66 Texas A&M victory at Reed Arena. The Commodores began hitting their stride a couple of games later, and I like Vanderbilt to keep it going with a quality showing in the rematch. Should be a fun one.
