AR-Pine Bluff Golden Lions

Arkansas-Pine Bluff opened up the year with a 9-11 run over their first 20 outings. In the next six games the Golden Lions went just 1-5 though, losing to Grambling State, Alcorn State, Jackson State, Alabama State and Alabama A&M along the way.

In the Saturday matchup versus Prairie View A&M, the Lions held a slim 35-34 edge by halftime. AR-Pine Bluff was outscored 48-36 the rest of the way however and lost 82-71. Shaun Doss was the top team scorer with 15 points and six rebounds.

Texas Southern Tigers

Over on the Texas Southern side, their season opened on a rough 4-14 run through 18 games. The Tigers went 5-3 in their next eight games, though. The wins in that time came over Jackson State, Alabama A&M, Alabama State, Bethune-Cookman and Southern U.

Matched up against MS Valley State on Saturday, the Tigers were up 42-30 going into the second half. Texas Southern scored 38 more points from there in an 80-62 win. PJ Henry was tops on 19 points and four assists.

ANDREW’S FREE PICK

I’ve got to stick with Texas Southern in this one. The Tigers have won consecutive games and three of their last four (with 69 or more points in each of those wins). Texas Southern had a rough second half in the first meeting between these teams this year, getting outscored 41-30 in an eventual 70-66 defeat at H.O. Clemmons Arena back on January 7. The Tigers are playing better these days, and I like them to bounce back with a home cover in this rematch. This one could be a fairly high-scoring affair; the Lions have hit 67 or more points in seven straight themselves.
