The Western Carolina Catamounts and the Citadel Bulldogs meet Wednesday in college basketball action from McAlister Field House. Western Carolina is 8-12 so far and lost to Mercer in their last game. As for the Citadel, they’re currently 8-10. The Bulldogs beat East Tennessee State in their most recent matchup. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
Western Carolina got off to a reasonable 6-4 start this year over their first 10 games. It’s been a 2-8 run since then, though. The losses have been courtesy of UNC Asheville, Georgia, Charlotte, Samford, East Tennessee State, Wofford, Furman and Mercer.
In the Mercer matchup, the Catamounts had a 28-25 lead by halftime. Western Carolina was outscored 47-36 in the second for a 72-64 loss, however. Joe Petrakis led the way on 20 points, and Cam Bacote added 14 points with two boards.
Over on the Citadel side, they hit a 6-3 run over their first nine games in a decent start. The Bulldogs are just 2-7 since then, losing to SC State, Manhattan, Western Carolina, Chattanooga, VMI, Mercer and Wofford alongside wins over UNCG and East Tennessee State.
Matched up against East Tennessee State on Saturday, the Bulldogs were down by two points heading into the second half. The Citadel went on a 45-41 run to bag a 75-73 comeback win. Hayden Brown led the way on 28 points and four boards.
The Citadel is 1-4 ATS in their last five at home and 0-4-1 ATS in their last five after a straight-up win. The under is 7-2 in the Bulldogs’ last nine Wednesday games.
Meanwhile, the Catamounts are 1-4 ATS in their last five road games and 0-3-1 ATS in their last four after an ATS win. The over is 35-16 in WCU’s last 51 road games.
PICK: I’m going to try the Citadel in this one. The last time these teams met up back on January 5, the Catamounts pulled off a 94-90 overtime win. Western Carolina didn’t shoot especially well (37.3 percent) but won the rebound battle 42-36 and had just eight turnovers.
This matchup should be another close, high-scoring dogfight as well—even though Western Carolina hasn’t scored all that well lately. I like the Citadel to get some revenge here on a cover/win. Should be a fun matchup to watch.
