Longwood Lancers

Longwood opened up the year on a pretty decent 14-6 run through 20 games. The Lancers are 4-3 since then, beating Presbyterian, Campbell, Presbyterian again and High Point. The losses came to Radford, Charleston Southern and Winthrop in that time.

On Saturday versus High Point, Longwood had a 37-29 lead in the locker room. The Lancers had to scramble in the second half on a 38-33 deficit but still won 70-67. Leading scorer Isaiah Wilkins had 21 points and four rebounds.

USC Upstate Spartans

Over on the USC Upstate side, they opened up the year on a .500 run at 9-9 through 18 games. The Spartans are 3-4 in their last seven with losses to UNC Asheville, Gardner-Webb, Radford and Campbell prior to a three-game win streak.

Matched up against Winthrop on Saturday, the Spartans were ahead 41-28 at halftime. USC Upstate was outscored 42-38 in the second half in an eventual 79-70 win. Both Jordan Gainey and Justin Bailey scored a team-high 16 points.

ANDREW’S FREE PICK

I’m probably taking Longwood here. The Lancers have had their ups and downs over the last seven outings or so, however this matchup should be well within their wheelhouse. Longwood has hit 70 or more points in three of their last four games so they’re scoring pretty well these days. The Lancers also took a win 72-65 the last time these teams met up at Willett Hall back on January 14. USC Upstate will be fairly dangerous at home, but if Longwood gets off to a good start I can see them covering.
