Southern Miss came out of the gate this year with a 4-2 record featuring losses to Louisiana and TCU. Since then it’s been four straight losses for the Eagles versus Southern Illinois, Jacksonville, LA-Monroe and East Carolina.

In the East Carolina game, the Golden Eagles had a 31-26 lead at halftime. Southern Miss was outscored 42-36 from there in a 68-67 loss. Jaron Pierre led the team with 20 points, and Tyler Stevenson added 16 points with eight boards.

Over on the UTSA side, they went 6-4 in their first 10 matchups, falling to Oklahoma, Texas A&M-Commerce, Texas A&M-CC and Grand Canyon. After three more losses, the Roadrunners finally got back in the win column versus Dallas Christian.

In the Monday game versus the Crusaders, the Roadrunners got off to a 55-12 advantage by halftime. UTSA finished with a 101-48 win. Jordan Ivy-Curry put up 17 points, and Lamin Sabally added 15 points with six boards.

UTSA is 34-16-1 ATS in their last 51 at home and 8-3-1 ATS in their last 12 as a home favorite. The over is 4-1 in the Roadrunners’ last five Thursday games.

Meanwhile, the Eagles are 1-4 ATS in their last five road games and 1-5 ATS in their last six overall. The over is 5-1-1 in Southern Miss’ last seven road games.

PICK: I’m going to try UTSA. Probably staying away from this one, though; there’s not a lot to like about these teams right now. That said, UTSA is coming off a confidence-building blowout win. That’s much-needed, as the Roadrunners had scored 64 or fewer points in three straight games prior. As for Southern Miss, they haven’t seen more than 67 points in any of their last seven outings. These teams should match up fairly well if they’re both on point here, but I think UTSA has the inside track on a potential cover.
