Wisconsin Badgers

The Badgers have a couple of double-digit wins sandwiched around a pair of double-digit losses so far this year. Wisconsin beat Arkansas State 105-76 in their opener, then gave up 50 percent shooting from the field to Tennessee in an 80-70 loss. The Badgers fell again in game three to Providence 72-59.

Wisconsin was able to pull back to .500 on the year following a matchup with Robert Morris back on Friday. The Badgers held a slim two-point lead by the break, then added 41 more points in a 78-68 victory. Leading the scoring were Tyler Wahl (five rebounds) and John Blackwell, each with 18 points.

Virginia Cavaliers

Over on the Cavaliers’ side, they’ve really only had one close game so far, a 73-70 win over Florida back on November 10. Virginia got out-rebounded 47-30 in that one and hit just 14-of-24 from the line (58.3 percent) The Cavaliers bounced back in their next game though, taking out NC A&T 80-51.

Virginia bagged another blowout win versus an overmatched opponent in their most recent outing on Thursday. The Cavaliers were up 26-14 by the break and cruised to the win 62-33. The Cavaliers’ lead scorer was Ryan Dunn with 15 points, five rebounds and two assists. Both Reece Beekman and Leon Bond added eight points apiece.

ANDREW’S FREE PICK

I’m going to stay with Virginia in this one. The Cavaliers are doing great so far this year (outside of some sketchy stat categories in the Florida game). Virginia is coming off another dominant defensive effort, holding Texas Southern to just 26.1 percent shooting from the floor and 20 turnovers. The Cavaliers haven’t quite been electric on offense, but they’re hitting shots at a decent clip.

As for Wisconsin, they shot 53.3 percent from the field but just 23.1 percent (3-for-13) from 3-point range in the win over Robert Morris. The Badgers have the capability to keep up offensively in this one, but I don’t think they’ll crack Virginia’s defense.
