Yale managed a couple of wins to kick off the 2021-22 season, taking out Vassar 88-42 and UMass 91-71. The Bulldogs lost to Seton Hall, then beat Siena in an 82-54 blowout. Game five was another loss for Yale, this time 61-53 against Vermont.
On Tuesday against Southern Utah, Yale had a 39-33 first-half lead but the Thunderbirds ended up forcing overtime. The Bulldogs were outscored 15-12 from there in an 88-85 loss. Leading scorer Azar Swain put up 21 points with eight rebounds in the defeat.
Over on the Milwaukee side, they were able to get a win over North Dakota in their opener this year, taking it 75-60. The Panthers lost in game two to Eastern Kentucky 77-71, then fell again to Florida 81-45 in game three.
On Tuesday against Bowling Green, Milwaukee kept up in the first half with a 37-36 deficit but faded from there during an eventual 82-68 defeat. DeAndre Gholston was the only team player in double-figures with 19 points and four rebounds.
PICK: I’m going to try Yale in this one. The Bulldogs have been scoring pretty well overall this season, outside of the 53 points against Vermont and the 44 versus Seton Hall. In Tuesday’s loss, Yale shot well (47.1 percent) but got outmuscled on the boards 42-36 and hit a tepid 10-of-15 (66.7 percent) from the line. Provided the Bulldogs can get their offense moving again here, I think they’re probably the better cover option.
