The Texas Longhorns meet the Oklahoma Sooners Saturday in Big 12 college football action as the Red River Rivalry resumes from the Cotton Bowl. Oklahoma just finished up against Kansas State last weekend. In that game the Sooners eked by with a six-point win. As for Texas, they played TCU in their last outing. Oklahoma took a tight win versus a pesky Tulane team in their opener 40-35, then followed that up with an absolutely dominant 76-0 blowout win over Western Carolina. The Sooners kept it going after that with wins over Nebraska 23-16 and West Virginia 16-13 in the next pair.
Last weekend versus Kansas State, Oklahoma scored in every quarter but still had to fight off the Wildcats in a tight 37-31 win. QB Spencer Rattler put up 243 yards with two TDs and one interception, and Kennedy Brooks had 15 carries for 91 yards and a score.
Over on the Longhorns’ side, they beat Louisiana 38-18 in their opener, but then faltered versus a tough Arkansas team with a 40-21 loss in week two. Texas would then beat Rice 58-0 and Texas Tech 70-35 in their next two games to move to 3-1 on the year.
In game five versus TCU, Texas was outscored in the second half but still managed to hang on for a 32-27 win. Quarterback Casey Thompson put up 142 yards with a TD and a pick, and Bijan Robinson did most of the heavy lifting with 35 carries for 216 yards and two TDs.
The Sooners are 1-4 ATS in their last five on grass and 1-4 ATS in their last five overall. The over is 37-18 in the Sooners’ last 55 in October.
Meanwhile, the Longhorns are 6-1 ATS in their last seven overall and 5-1 ATS in their last six neutral-site games. Texas is also 12-5 ATS in their last 17 on grass.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Oklahoma. The Sooners had to fight off a pesky Kansas State team last weekend; the Wildcats were on fire with 420 total yards and 6.2 yards per play on average. OK was able to counter that with 392 yards and 22 first downs of their own, however.
As for Texas, they powered out a gutsy win last weekend, thanks mostly to their 272 rush yards and 32:48 time of possession. The Longhorns only punted twice, but also had a sloppy game with nine penalties. I like Texas to hang around here for a while before Oklahoma pulls away in the second half.
