Michigan State vs Toledo Prediction Football Picks Today 9/4/26

The Toledo Rockets and the Michigan State Spartans meet Friday in college football action from Spartan Stadium in East Lansing. Here’s a Michigan State vs Toledo prediction. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best Michigan State vs Toledo pick.

Toledo Rockets Betting Preview

Toledo had a decent season in 2025, but underperformed expectations overall and ended the campaign on a down note. The Rockets would ultimately finish 8-5 with a 6-2 run in the Mid-American Conference. That result left the team behind Western Michigan, Miami-OH and Ohio in the standings. In the Boca Raton Bowl (following the departure of head coach Jason Candle) the Rockets fell to Louisville 27-22.

Moving on to this year’s campaign, Toledo will be helmed by new head coach Mike Jacobs. The team has a pretty solid-looking transfer class on the roster, and the core of the offense is promising as well. Junior QB John Alan Richter is back under center, and he’ll have four starters back in the fold on the offensive line. There’s good reason to be high on the Rockets right now.

Michigan State Spartans Betting Preview

Over on the Michigan State side, they weren’t able to have much success last season amid a rough Big Ten schedule. The Spartans were able to win their first three games, then lost the next eight before a season-ending victory over Maryland. The resulting 4-8 record overall (and 1-8 run in the Big Ten) left Michigan State ahead of only Purdue in the conference standings as the year would down.

Outside of defensive coordinator Joe Rossi (third year) the Spartans have a fresh start all across the coaching staff. Michigan State will be under the guidance of new head coach Pat Fitzgerald, who will try to inject a physical, defense-minded philosophy in the team. The Spartans will have Alessio Milivojevic under center alongside transfer RB Cam Edwards as the core of their 2026 offense. Whether or not they’ll be able to find any room in their tough Big Ten matchups remains to be seen.

Michigan State vs Toledo Prediction

I’m going to take a stab on Toledo here. On paper, the Rockets are looking pretty good when it comes to potentially rebounding from a rough season. Toledo brought in a nice batch of transfers this year, including 11 previous all-conference selections. The big get was 2025 FCS Defensive Player of the Year Andrew Zock at defensive end. By the end of September we should have a good idea of this team’s potential, as they’ve got intriguing matchups versus Temple, San Diego State and Michigan State set this month.

Speaking of Michigan State, they’re in for a very interesting season with Fitzgerald back on the sidelines. The ceiling here would likely be a bowl berth; if the team doesn’t gel however, it’ll be another losing campaign. This opener against a relatively good Toledo team should be a nice test for the Spartans. It’ll be a fun game to check out.
