Penn State vs Minnesota Prediction

I’ll stick with Penn State but it’s a coin flip. The Nittany Lions bagged a very important win over Washington last weekend, their second consecutive victory. Penn State managed 414 total yards in that one with 21 first downs, 7-of-15 on third downs and zero turnovers. The Lions allowed just 15 first downs and 4-of-12 on third downs defensively, barely hanging on for a three-point win. The Lions have scored very well during their wins this year; they’ve hit 27 or more points in all five of them and 23 or fewer in all four losses.

As for Minnesota, they’ve struggled over the last four games at 1-3 but they’ve still got a great shot for that bowl bid. The Gophers took a 14-point loss to a great UCLA team last weekend, giving up just 15 first downs and 6-of-13 on third-down tries alongside a couple of takeaways on defense. Minnesota coughed up 466 yards total though, and could only muster 296 yards and 14 first downs on offense to compensate. The Gophers have gone through a gauntlet of three straight ranked teams so this matchup may be a bit of an exhale. I could see Minnesota rallying to control this one in a nice road showing but I like Penn State at home a little better overall.

Minnesota Golden Gophers Betting Preview

The Gophers got off to a very nice start this year but they’ve struggled over the last quartet. Minnesota opened with wins over Eastern Illinois, Akron, Washington and Michigan (and a loss to Mississippi State) during a 4-1 start. Since then it’s been a 1-3 run with a win over Iowa mixed among losses to Purdue, Indiana and UCLA. In nine games so far that gives the team a 5-4 overall record in the books.

Last weekend versus UCLA, Minnesota was down 10-0 after the first quarter but managed to pull it together and tie things up at the half. The Gophers were within four points late in the game but ended up losing a tough one 34-20. Leading the way was QB Drake Lindsey with a 19-of-37 line for 205 yards, one TD and a pick. Darius Taylor carried 14 times for 46 yards and a TD while Jalen Smith had five grabs for 85 yards in the losing effort for the Gophers.

Penn State Nittany Lions Betting Preview

Over on the Penn State side, they were able to rattle off wins in their first three straight games versus Marshall, Temple and Buffalo. After that came a four-game losing streak versus Wisconsin, Northwestern, USC and Michigan. The Nittany Lions would recover with a win over Purdue on Halloween, giving the team a 4-4 record across their first eight games of the year.

Matched up against Washington last weekend, the Lions scored three times in the second quarter on the way to a 28-6 halftime lead. Penn State nearly let it slip away but eventually won the game 28-25. QB Rocco Becht was 16-of-27 for 240 yards and two scores. Carson Hansen led the rush with 14 carries for 119 yards and a touchdown.
