The UConn Huskies meet the Wyoming Cowboys Saturday in week 4 college football action from Rentschler Field. Wyoming is coming off a game versus Ball State. The Cowboys posted a blowout win in that game. As for the Huskies, they played Army last weekend. In that one, UConn ended up falling by 31 points. Wyoming posted a tight victory over Montana State in their opener, scoring 16 points in the fourth quarter to power out a tough 19-16 result. Game two against Northern Illinois was similarly tight, as the Cowboys fended off a late surge to hang on for a 50-43 win.
In game three versus Ball State, Wyoming jumped out to a 31-0 halftime lead and never looked back in a 45-12 blowout win. QB Sean Chambers put up 201 yards with a TD on 14-of-23 passing, and Xazavian Valladay had 61 yards and a TD off 14 carries.
Over on the UConn side, they stumbled out of the gate this year in late August with a 45-0 blowout loss to Fresno State. After a 38-28 loss to Holy Cross on September 4, the Huskies couldn’t figure out Purdue in game three either. UConn fell 49-0 in that one.
The Huskies matched up against Army last weekend. UConn coughed up 28 points in the second half during an eventual 52-21 defeat. QB Tyler Phommachanh had 109 yards and an interception, while also leading the rush on 11 carries for 60 yards and two touchdowns.
The Cowboys are 3-1-1 ATS in their last five in September and 3-1-1 ATS in their last five non-conference games. Wyoming is also 1-3-1 ATS in their last five road games.
Meanwhile, the Huskies are 18-37-1 ATS in their last 56 on grass and 18-38-3 ATS in their last 59 after an ATS loss. UConn is 15-37-2 ATS in their last 54 overall as well.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Wyoming here. The Cowboys had some pretty solid offensive numbers in their win last week, with 378 total yards and a 6.1-yard average per play. Wyoming won the turnover battle 3-0 and went 5-of-12 on third and fourth downs.
As for UConn, they couldn’t stop the Army rush with 397 yards allowed and 7.2 yards per play. The Huskies had just 109 pass yards themselves and could only find nine first downs. UConn is going to need a lot of improvements if they’re going to be competitive in this one.
