Southern Miss had a tense overtime affair versus Liberty in their 2022 opener. The Eagles stretched it to four overtime periods but eventually fell 29-27. In game two against Miami, Southern Miss couldn’t find too many opportunities in a 30-7 loss.
In game three versus Northwestern State, the Eagles didn’t have much trouble. Southern Miss jumped out to a 31-0 halftime lead and cruised to a 64-10 finish. QB Ty Keyes had 192 yards and three scores, and Frank Gore Jr. led the rush with 82 yards and a TD on seven carries.
Over on the Tulane side, they got their offense working right out of the gate against UMass in the opener, posting a 42-10 victory. The Green Wave kept flying high in game two versus Alcorn State as well. Tulane took a shutout win 52-0 in that one.
Matched up against Kansas State back on Saturday, Tulane was down 10-7 at halftime but eventually got it going for the 17-10 comeback win. Michael Pratt finished with 176 yards, one TD and two picks while also leading the rush with 13 carries for 87 yards.
The Eagles are 6-0 ATS in their last six overall and 4-0 ATS in the last four after an ATS win. Southern Miss is 6-0 in their last six non-conference games.
Meanwhile, the Wave are 7-1 ATS versus a team with a losing record and 6-2 ATS in their last eight in September. Tulane is 10-4 ATS in their last 14 non-conference games.
PICK: I’m probably going to stick with Tulane. The Wave are coming off an absolute battle against Kansas State; it was a defense-heavy affair with only three third-down conversions in 27 combined tries between the two teams. Tulane coughed up a couple of turnovers but otherwise did a solid job in a tough matchup.
As for Southern Miss, they finally got to stretch their legs in a blowout victory against Northwestern State and looked good doing it. The Eagles posted 588 total yards and 21 first downs, but this is obviously going to be a much tougher matchup.
